The history of the Canary Islands:
EXPLORATIONS

The Canary Islands were explored by different people in ancient times, and mainly by the romans. The most complete description of the islands was written by Pliny the Elder, who lived from 23-79 AD. You can read an extract from his book 'Natural history' here.

In the book you can read about an expedition that went to the Canary islands, and what they found here. The expedition was led by Juba II, who was a governor of Mauretania (Morocco), a Roman protectorate.

The exploration revealed that the islands were unhabited at that time, but that it had been settlements there earlier. Amongst others they found a 'small temple built of a single stone' on the island of La Palma, which they referred to as Junonia.

After this time the islands are not mentioned often and are considered more of a myth.
