La Palma:
“an island for those who like ... the rain”
We are back today from La Palma, where we spent the week from January 29 to February 5.
La Palma is certainly a very interesting island for geologists but we recommend others to avoid it in Winter. Because it is a mountain, it is freezing (snow...) and you need to go there with anoraks... It is a small volcanic island with very high mountains (2400 m). It is said to be very green and beautiful and great for people who love to walk or ride a bicycle. I advise only champions to go there for cycling as the roads are never flat, the slopes are very strong, much stronger than in the Alps... If it is green, there is a reason: it rains every day. According to local people, it rains mainly on the north and on the east part (the winds from the north-east bring heavy clouds which are blocked by the mountains and stay there). It rains less on the south west of the island but there are still big clouds.
